Birmingham Skies

from Dating Satans Sister by Kevin Blight

/

about

Written when I was working in Birmingham. A celebration of the diverse cultures and vibrancy of that city.

lyrics

There's an old man by the foundry taking bricks from the wall
That is crumbling like an early morning dream
There's not an engine part been made here these last 15 years
He's not a rich man or so proud that he won't steal

And the kids around the corner spot a dirty windowpane
That somehow has escaped their attention
They take it in turns to throw stones and pieces of old pipe
'Till they're satisfied with its destruction

And another day is ending under Birmingham skies
I'm making my way back home, and then
Another minute, another mile, it's further behind
I can't wait to be home again

There's an old lady walking past a Blue-lit Mosque
Covered from head to toe in Black
No-one knows if she is smiling or scowling under that hood
As she carries her daily shopping back

There's a Sikh guy sitting at the lights in his Mercedes-Benz
And it's pumping Ozone and heavy music
The lights change & he stalls it, mouths some words we can't hear
And screeches off in a cloud of smoke to our amusement

And another day is ending under Birmingham skies
I'm making my way back home and then
Another minute, another mile, it's further behind
I can't wait to be home again

And another day is ending under Birmingham skies
I'm making my way back home and then
Another minute, another mile, it's further behind
I can't wait to be home again
